HORNE, FRANCIS R., AND KLAUS W. BEYENBACH. Physiological properties of hemoglobin in the branchiopod crustacean Triops. Am. Je Physiol. 220(6) : 1875188 1. 197 1 .-Hemoglobin of the freshwater crustacean, Triops longicaudatus, was found to have oxygen equilibrium curves similar to those of the white rat when compared under identical experimental conditions (e.g. pH-7.1; temp = 22-23 C; Hb = 2 mg/lOO ml; P50 = 6.8 mm 02 (Triops) ; PsO = 6.1 mm 02 (rat)). Magnitudes of temperature and Bohr effects, however, were different. Triops hemoglobin was affected least by both parameters. Physiological concentrations of the chloride salts of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium did not affect equilibria, whereas high concentrations of calcium (52 I& and magnesium (15 mM) increased oxygen affinity (PM reduced from 8.73 to 6.7 mm 0,). Oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, hemoglobin concentration, and carbon monoxide affinity of hemoglobin were 3.22 vol %, 1.62 g/100 ml, and 282:l (CO:Oz). By comparing respiratory rates of normal and carbon monoxide-treated animals, Trio/q hemoglobin was found not to be essential for survival. Instead, hemoglobin seems only to assist in oxygen delivery to the tissues during periods of oxygen stress. Some individuals in all Triops populations have little, if any, hemoglobin.

Environmental hypoxia influences hemoglobin subunit composition in the branchiopod crustacean Triops longicaudatus.
Hemoglobin (Hb) is a highly conserved protein that provides a vital link between environmental oxygen and its use and/or storage within an organism. While ubiquitous among vertebrates, Hb occurs frequently in invertebrate phyla as well. Many arthropod species use the copper-binding pigment hemocyanin, but unique in this phylum are the branchiopod crustaceans, which express Hb. Branchiopod Hb co...
متن کاملAminergic modulation of the myogenic heart in the branchiopod crustacean Triops longicaudatus.
Although crustaceans typically have a neurogenic heart, the primitive crustacean Triops longicaudatus has a myogenic heart with the heartbeat arising from the endogenous rhythmic activity of the myocardium. In the present investigation, the effects of six biogenic amines, epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, octopamine, serotonin and histamine, on the myogenic heart of T. longicaudatus were e...
متن کاملMolecular characterization of visual pigments in Branchiopoda and the evolution of opsins in Arthropoda.
Studies on color vision in invertebrates have focused primarily on insect visual pigments, with little attention given to crustacean visual pigments. None of the blue-green-, blue-, or ultraviolet (UV)-sensitive-opsins have been identified in crustaceans. In addition, the discussion of visual pigments has been limited to long-wavelength-sensitive opsins in Pancrustacea. Here, we focused on Bran...
متن کاملMolecular phylogeny of the Notostraca.
We used a combined analysis of one nuclear (28S rDNA) and three mitochondrial markers (COI, 12S rDNA, 16S rDNA) to infer the molecular phylogeny of the Notostraca, represented by samples from the six continents that are inhabited by this group of branchiopod crustaceans. Our results confirm the monophyly of both extant notostracan genera Triops and Lepidurus with good support in model based and...
متن کاملConserved and convergent organization in the optic lobes of insects and isopods, with reference to other crustacean taxa.
The shared organization of three optic lobe neuropils-the lamina, medulla, and lobula-linked by chiasmata has been used to support arguments that insects and malacostracans are sister groups. However, in certain insects, the lobula is accompanied by a tectum-like fourth neuropil, the lobula plate, characterized by wide-field tangential neurons and linked to the medulla by uncrossed axons. The i...
